Artist Information
Bridget Riley was born in London in 1931 and trained at both Goldsmiths and the Royal
College of Art. She was one of the leading Op (Optical)Artists of the 20th Century
and along with others such as Soto and Vasarely, she was responsible for developing
the movement throughout the 1960's and bringing it to an international stage. Her
interest in optical effects came partly through her study of Seurat's technique of
pointillism, but when she took up Op art in the early 1960's she worked initially
in black and white. She turned to colour in 1966.
The focus of Riley's work is primarily the exploration of the interaction between
colour when displayed in twisting and straight linear forms. She is especially
famous for her striking images in black and white on canvas and Perspex in the
early 1960's. In recent years her work as a printmaker has ensured that the value placed
on her pieces continues to grow. The seal was set on her reputation when she won the
International Painting Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1968.
