Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali
Artist Biography
Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist best-known for his flamboyant personality and Surrealist paintings. Obsessive themes of eroticism, death, and decay permeate Dali's work and the imagery used often has symbolic meaning connected with Freudian psychoanalytical theories: recurring themes include, the human figure with half-open drawers protruding from it, burning giraffes and watches bent and flowing as if made from melting wax.
Dali's paintings also evince a fascination for Classical and Renaissance art, clearly visible through his hyper-realistic style and religious symbolism of his later work. Dali is most often associated with the Surrealist movement, despite his formal expulsion from the group in 1934 for his reactionary political views.
