Andre Derain was born on June 10 1880 in France. A close friend of Matisse , Darain was a leading artist in the "Fauves" (Wild Beasts) group, so called for their bold use of colour. Derain enjoyed great success durin his lifetime and was even courted by Nazis when they occupied Paris , leading to accusations of collaboration but he had little choice in the matter. Derain's work now hangs in many of the leading galleries around the world.
