Watercolours by Thomas Yeomans
John Gilks
Thomas Yeomans is a painter and digital artist based in London. His work explores the history and application of signs and symbols from ancient civilisations through to contemporary advertising. He is interested in how simple designs can become containers in which we invest our faith, political beliefs and sense of identity. For his latest series of paintings, Yeomans has imagined a series of Modern flags whose designs make reference to Mid-Century movements of abstraction.
These designs reappear in larger paintings, depicted as flags billowing in the wind against panoramic skies. As flags, the designs take on additional meanings as markers of territory or emblems of group identity. With our current moment feeling increasingly precarious, Yeomans wonders whether Modernism's promise of progress might provide an urgently needed optimism.
The series are currently on display in our gallery and are priced at £225 each (framed).
